The Honorable Nydia M. Velazquez, Member of the U.S. House of Representatives, New York

Thank you, Congressman Gonzalez. Tonight, I'm proud to speak to you as a patriotic Hispanic American, as a proud Latina, and as a Puerto Rican. From being the first in my family to attend college to becoming the first Latina to chair a full congressional committee in Congress, my story has been the American dream. And as Democrats, we want to strengthen the American dream for all. In Spanish there is a saying that many mothers tell their children: "Dime con quien andas y te dire quien eres." "Tell me with whom you walk and I will tell you who you are." Tonight, I want to talk about who I've seen President Obama walk with. President Obama has walked with our small businesses—our job creators. He knows small businesses are the backbone of our economy, and that is why he has signed 18 tax cuts into law to help our entrepreneurs succeed. President Obama has walked with seniors. President Obama's health care law won the support of the AARP because it strengthened Medicare without cutting benefits and helps millions of seniors with free preventive care and more affordable prescription drugs. President Obama has walked with our young people—America's future. He has made the investments in their future that pay enormous dividends for our nation: from doubling funding for Pell grant scholarships to make college more affordable, to Head Start, to community college, to job training. President Obama has walked with America's women. President Obama is helping women access preventive health services like cancer screenings, contraception and well-women exams. Meanwhile, Mitt Romney and Republicans in Congress would like to roll back a woman's access to important preventive care, turn over women's health decisions to their bosses, and defund Planned Parenthood. And President Obama has walked with the Hispanic community. Because of President Obama's work, more Hispanics have access to health care, more Hispanic students can afford a college education, and now dreamers who are American in every way except on paper, no longer live under the shadow of deportation. Mitt Romney, on the other hand, is walking away from us. He walks with people who disrespect us, and people who divide us and people who don't believe that the American dream means all of us. President Obama has walked with us for the last four years—in good times and in tough times. And now, we are going to walk with the president to the polls and onward to victory. Thank you, Democrats!

White Boys Whine

Quick  and dirty   Star Trek  Discovery  is everything  I  thought  it would  be.  It is my hope the White  boys  chill the fuck out .  There will be a White male captain .   The Black  woman  will be of a lowered  status.  White  boys  are you appeased ? My personal  view fuck White  boys who had their dicks in a vise  over women  of color  at the helm of a fictional  space vessel.  I shall watch  Star Trek  Discovery .  I shall pay the fee to CBS Access  with joy. If you wanted to watch OITNB you paid  Netflix . Overall  I look  forward  to the day a fictional  show  that features  women  of color  in prominent  positions  doesn't  freak out White males.  They were  so freaked  out  they compared  The Orville  to Star Trek  Discover...

New century no time for old games

As I prepared to write my comments on the Marcus Smart/Jeff Orr incident, I noticed a grown-ass man push a chair in the path of two running children at McDs.  I moved the chair and informed the man I was helping him by preventing the children from tripping.  I informed him that if the children tripped he and I would have an altercation.  He had not one word to say to me.  Punk assed grown assed men don't fuck with grown-ups only those they consider weak.  These people are the ones who will take pics of their gun collections to post on FB or Twitter.  These are the ones who will heckle college kids with racial slurs, "go back to Africa", or "Where is your green card."  As a mother, I can only hope my example of not being a punk has become embedded in my kids.  Real strength comes from knowing who you are and not seeking to belittle others.  My thoughts on Marcus Smart and Jeff Orr are simple. Marcus don't let it get to you.  It is sad...

The words we use

Someone in the media is in hot water for calling the president a dick. In all fairness I have said worse about Dick Cheney and George Bush. Well Cheney. I do not think anyone should be in trouble for call president a dick. However I have yet to see President Obama do anything that warrants my calling him anything other than Mr. President. He has not started any unwarranted wars. He has not fought to keep the American people in financial bondage. He has worked to change the tax code to keep the American economy viable. Why would anyone call Obama a dick is beyond me. IMHO we have had people in power who were true dicks. They managed to screw the people of America and the world so badly it will take a decade to feel normal. - Posted using BlogPress from my iPhone
